The first evening of Winter Conference, 1,012 students filled the ballroom as D.A. Horton launched us into a weekend considering our response to the compassion of God in our lives. If our God is compassionate, how also may we be compassionate?

Horton defined compassion for us as the fuel that drives our acts of kindness and mercy. If compassion is like fuel in a car how much is in your tank? Compassion is the fuel that makes us passionate about alleviating the suffering of someone being afflicted.
Students had the opportunity to listen to a variety of topics including:

  • How does my ethnicity affect how I view God, the World, Myself?
  • If God is so compassionate, then why is Jesus the only way to be saved?
  • How to reach Muslim Students in America
  • Spiritual Disciplines for a Snapchat Generation
  • Why Justice Matters, Why you matter
  • Porn, Sexuality, & the Compassion of Jesus

Less than 24 hours after students arrived, they launched into a Day of Compassion partnered with churches and organizations in Orange County and Los Angeles. Activities for the day ranged from helping a church throw a neighborhood BBQ, to playing sports with under-privileged youth, to simply sparking spiritual conversation with people at Huntington Beach.

This Winter Conference is a special place for JJ and I (Carly). This year was the 10th time we have had the privilege of attending, starting when we were students back in Chico. It holds many special and important memories for us. JJ gave his life to the Lord after hearing Francis Chan share the gospel 10 years ago. We met for the first time when I was a Sophomore and he was a freshman right before one of the meetings. At the conference, we felt called to be missionaries. JJ proposed to me while we were staying in Southern California after the conference. Now, this year Naomi went and slept through most of the meetings. We are praising God for his faithfulness in our lives. We continue to see God calling us into ministry with college students.

Thank you for taking part in God’s plan for reaching the nations with the gospel! We are forever grateful for your love and partnership!

Until the World Hears, JJ, Carly, and Naomi
