How are we going to reach six universities and junior colleges encompassing over 150,000 college students in Orange County? When I process this question, I (JJ) think about our need for the Holy Spirit to move. I get excited and filled with ideas! Orange County has so much potential to reach today’s leaders.
This summer I officially accepted a new role with Cru as we continue to trust the Lord to reach students in Orange County. The Lord called me to take the role of a Team Leader. I will be co-leading with Carly and our good friend Jon. The three of us will be providing leadership development, vision and direction to our staff team. I will primarily be focusing on digital strategies and operations for South Orange County Cru. Carly and I continue to spend a majority of our time doing hands-on ministry with students, but we also desire to steward our strengths in leading our team.
We spent the summer in Fort Collins, Colorado where I participated in our National Cru Team Leader Training. I have received invaluable preparation in: 1) how to share the Gospel in a relevant way to today’s college students, 2) how to encourage and lead a staff team to reach our scope of South Orange County.
A highlight from the Team Leader Training was learning how to do cross cultural ministry. I sat at a table hearing stories from other ethnic leaders about marginalization and racism. It challenged me to think differently about reaching this generation’s college students. I also read a book called Divided by Faith, written by Michael Emerson. I have gained a greater vision and desire to reach every tribe, nation, tongue and people group in South Orange County. My hope is for Cru to be a multi ethnic and multi cultural Gospel centered movement reaching others for Christ.
I believe the university environment is unique in its ability to shape individual lives. It is also unique in its ability to shape the future of our world. Year after year, we see that what happens on college campuses changes the world. One of my favorite quotes is from a former UN secretary general, Dr. Charles Malik, who said, “The University is a clear cut fulcrum with which to move the world. More potently than any other means, change the university today and you will change the world tomorrow.” Carly and I’s vision is to rely on God to change universities in South Orange County and the world with the Gospel.
We want to say thank you! Thank you for your partnership in ministry. We are so blessed by you. Your investment is truly changing the lives of young adults and college students for eternity.
- Pray the Lord will give us guidance in how to reach influential students.
- Pray for college students’ lives to be radically changed by the Gospel.
- Pray for the Lord to give us wisdom in how to care for students from many different backgrounds and cultures.
